A Review of Loose Ends by Electa Rome Parks

This is the sequel to The Ties That Bind where I was first introduced to Christian, Brice, and Mia. Christian and Brice are best friends and Brice and Mia on the surface appeared to be happily married. But Brice had a temper which he sometimes couldn’t control and Mia got the brunt of it. When Brice beat her for the very last time, and she ended up in the hospital, it was there she finally mustered up enough courage to divorce him.

In Loose Ends, Mia has moved on with her life which included finishing college and she and Christian are now married with a beautiful daughter. Everything seemed to be going nicely until Brice reached out wanting to make amends to both of them. Brice wanted his homeboy back and he wanted to see Mia again. Mia was against them meeting Brice and his new wife, Kree because while she wanted to move past the hurt, she was still drawn to Brice.

Let’s just say it wasn’t smooth sailing as Brice has reared his ugly ways again by beating on his second wife. And if that wasn’t enough, he still lusted after Mia who finally caved into his whims. The end result…broken trust, broken marriages and a yearning by Mia to get Christian back.

I thoroughly enjoyed this roller coaster of a novel that dealt with love, lust, and lies. The characters were well developed, the drama was real, and the dialogue was spot on. However, I felt that Brice’s death could have been explored in a little more depth. However, the emails he left Christian, Mia, and Kree before his death did speak to his state of mind, but I wanted more.

Overall, this is a very good read!

Some of my favorite lines:

“Your woman just walked in. Yeah, she found us okay. You wanna speak with her?  Okay. Hold on.”

Brice handed me the phone; reclined in his rolling chair and scrutinized me slowly while I talked to my husband. I could feel him taking in my body inch by inch, but this time it didn’t make me feel nervous. This time it made me feel sensual and sexy as I ran my fingers through my short hair. In my jeans, midriff T-shirt and tennis shoes, I felt sexy-cool.

Interview with Blaque Diamond, Author of The Stacey F Series of Children’s books which include She Named Me Stacey, A Temporary Home for Stacey, Stacey F. My Forever Mommy and the newly released Stacey F. Coloring and Activity Book

Author’s Bio: Blaque Diamond is the author of the Stacey F. children’s book series, She Named Me Stacey, A Temporary Home for Stacey, and Stacey F., My Forever Mommy as well as a Stacey F. coloring and activity book. Diamond graduated from Morgan State University School of Social Work, where she earned her BSW and MSW degrees and was an all-American Collegiate Scholar. In addition to writing children's books, she is an advocate for children waiting to be reunified with their biological families. Diamond has three biological children and has raised nine nieces and nephews, two of whom she was granted custody and three of whom she adopted from the NYC foster care system. She lives in Maryland with her children.

DL: What inspired you to write your book?
BD: Actually it was my nephew. He asked me why did I want to adopt him and why was he in foster care? After explaining to him; his truth, I realized his younger sibling was sitting nearby and I knew someday I would need to tell her; her truth as well, so I decided to write it down. And in doing so, I realized as a social worker that there are hundreds of children in foster care or adopted who don’t understand their journey, so I decided to write a children’s book series pleasant enough for children to read and easy enough for prospective foster/adoptive parents to understand.

DL: Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
BD: Yes, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, by Judy Blume. As a young girl, this book has given me first insight to GOD.

DL: Are these your first books? How long did it take to start and finish your book?
BD: No, my first book was my memoir, In My Mother’s House. In My Mother’s House took a few months to begin and nine years to finish, However, the Stacey F series took a few minutes to begin and two years to finish, which resulted in the series being released within the same year.

DL: Do you write with an outline, or just let it flow organically?
BD: I let it flow. The decision to display an outline of events in any order due to the nature of the book and the series is not a priority for me. Letting it flow allows my words to be free and my thought pattern to release.

DL: Do you listen to music when you write? If yes, is there a theme song for this book?
BD: I do listen to music sometimes. For the series of Stacey F books, there was no theme song, just life experience.

DL: What are the keys to success in getting your book out to the public?
BD: Know your target audience, ensure your book(s) are appealing i.e. book cover, fonts, graphics, and designs. Link your book to current topics, advertise, optimize your profile, build your social media platforms and decide when and what you would like to share and most importantly be honest with your audience.

DL: What advice would you give to new authors?
BD: Document, Document, Document.

DL: How about sharing an excerpt from Stacey F My Forever Mommy?

“What is a biological mother?” Stacey asked.
“A biological mother is a Mother who gives birth to you,” said Paige.
“Was Mrs. Penny my biological mother?” Stacey asked.
“No,” said Paige, “she was your Foster Mother.”
“Is Mrs. Grace my biological mother?” Stacey asked.
“No,” said Paige “she will be your Adoptive Mommy”
“What is the difference?” Stacey asked.
“Biological Mothers give birth to you. They love you unconditionally and sometimes have to make hard decisions,” said Paige.
“And Mrs. Penny was your foster mother, and foster mothers make a choice. They love you and want to take care of you temporarily,” said Paige
“And Mrs. Grace is your adoptive Mother, and adoptive mothers choose you. They love you, and they want to take care of you permanently,” said Paige.

DL: What’s next for you?
BD: What I am most excited about is The 2nd Annual It’s a Family Affair (IAFA) in celebration of National Adoption Month held November 18, 2017, 10am - 2pm at Sollers Point Multi-Purpose Center, Dundalk, MD 21222.  IAFA is an incessantly endless passage for individuals and families who would like to gain insight into foster care/adoption. You will speak to a panel of professionals with first-hand knowledge of foster care/adoption, Current foster/adoptive parents who love children unconditionally, and former foster/adoptive youth who has journeyed through the foster care/adoption system.

He enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with loved ones. Sherman’s goal is to help people all over the world achieve longevity by taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle. His belief is that once you set your mind on a goal, visualize the end result, your results are soon to follow.

What inspired you to write your book?
SM: I guess I can say my inspiration for writing this book came from all the people coming to me needing advice and plans on how to live a healthier lifestyle. I never thought in a million years that the information that I give could and would be in book format.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
SM: Letters to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny by Hill Harper.

Is this your first book? How long did it take to start and finish your book?
SM: Yes.  It took me about a month to get the book flowing the way I needed it to.

Do you write with an outline, or just let it flow organically?
SM: I wrote the book with an outline.  I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

Do you listen to music when you write? If yes, is there a theme song for this book?
SM: No, I don’t need music. I like to just let my thoughts marinate lol

What are the keys to success in getting your book out to the public?
SM: Marketing, having a good following, being personable, and serving people…I believe in giving before receiving.  That being said, most of the information in my book is information that I give freely on a daily basis.  My goal is to share this information globally and have a major impact on my community.

What advice would you give to new authors?
SM: My advice to new authors is to be diligent, persistent, never give up, and listen to your conscience.  Also, be open and willing to expand your talents and visions through other people.

How about sharing an excerpt from Ways to Stay on Track of a Healthy Lifestyle?

A Review of Dying for Revenge by Eric Jerome Dickey

EJD has delivered yet again in the third installment of the Gideon series. This time there’s hit out on Gideon by an adversary who will stop at nothing to see him dead. But it will take more than paying top dollar to vicious hit men and an equally vicious “woman hunter” to finish him off.

In this installment, Gideon is faced with protecting his family: a woman who birthed him but gave him up and now a young who may or may not be his mother’s son while working as a hired killer. In the midst of this, he is lured to a job in Antiqua and it wasn’t until he landed that he got a message from Konstantin, his handler, that it was a setup. He had no weapons except Hawks (a female assassin and his lover) and quick thinking.

Together, they created weapons out of empty soda cans, a pen, liquor bought at the airport, along with their varied martial arts skills. The fight scenes were like watching an action movie where I cheered for Gideon when he landed a few blows and winced when he was knocked down. However, he and Hawks survived until the final battle where the hunter became the hunted and the stars are realigned.

This was a page turner (460 pages) full of great descriptions, great dialogue, great fight scenes, and very interesting and well-developed characters. Also, loved that I had to pull out my dictionary a few times – always learning a few new words from EJD…priceless.

Overall, this is a must read!

Some of my favorite lines:

If it wasn’t for the problem I had in Detroit, I’d still have my homes in Seattle, in Stone Mountain, and on the outskirts of Los Angeles. She’d tracked me down, forced me into a state of homelessness.

She was the type of woman that a man couldn’t make deals with. She didn’t have enough sense to understand when she should be terrified. She didn’t know she should be pissing where she stood, that piss running down her legs into her high heels. She was a churchgoing Bible thumper who killed her own husband, the father of her children, had done that using her husband’s money and my hands.

She was a bloodthirsty psychopath who believed she was righteous.

Nobody stopped her from getting what she wanted.

And she was dying for my death. Dying for revenge.
